Fulfilling the civic mission of public education requires more than preparing students for the workplace – it demands developing citizens with the knowledge, analytic thinking skills and motivation to engage the core issues of our time. Now more than ever, students graduating from our schools need to understand their role in the broader international community in which they live, the history of how it evolved into its present form, and the peoples and systems of which it is comprised. Focusing on educational approaches appropriate to varying grade levels, subject areas, and student populations, ISTEP brings together classroom teachers, university faculty, school administrators and community members in a collaborative effort to graduate citizens capable of responding effectively to changing domestic and global realities.
